FARMING PRACTICES

Living on the Chippewa River we are very environmentally conscious and feel strongly about farming our land organically.

Riverdale Crops

This is a picture of one of our organic soybean fields in the summer of 1999.

Riverdale Sheep

This is a picture of our ewes and their lambs enjoying some lush rape and oats in one of the pastures on our farm. Picture was taken in the summer of 1999.

Riverdale Cattle

These are some of the cattle that call Riverdale Farm their home. We have about 100 head of cattle that are fed our own transitional and organic corn and hay. We have chosen a later calving season

Riverdale Chickens

Our cattle and chickens are raised without growth promotants or hormone implants. They are fed our own homegrown mixed hay or alfalfa and our organic corn. Antibiotics and medicated feeds are used on an as needed basis. The animals that have been given antibiotics or medicated feeds are marked and then sold on the conventional market.

Organic Certification

The OGBA (Organic Growers and Buyers Association) "certified organic" logo/trademark is well-known and OGBA products are readily accepted around the world. Organic standards disallow the use of pesticides and restricted fertilizers for three years before crop certification can take place.
